Many of these travel tips may also be helpful for people managing back, neck, or shoulder pain, even if osteoporosis is not your main diagnosis.
|
Sitting at Your Seat
- Neck and back supports (personal, pillow or blanket provided by airline)
- Consider collapsible footrest (or position bag as a footrest)
- Eye covers to help you sleep/rest
- Stand up as often as you can
|
|
In the Airport, Train or Bus Station
- Use elevators, not escalators.
|
|
Bags
-
Backpack: Use both shoulder straps, not just one.
-
Luggage: Place heavier items near the wheels and distribute weight evenly.
Other
- Stay hydrated.
- Ask your doctor about compression stockings if appropriate for travel.
|
|
Baggage: Lifting into Overhead Bins
- Ask if early boarding is possible when you check in.
- Lift to thigh, then lift to chest, step close and put into bin. Keep breast bone up.
- Get help if concerned.
- Avoid heavy bags. Don’t fling or twist.
|
|
Walking with Bags
- Use luggage with four wheels.
- Roll the bag beside you. Try not to pull it behind you.
|
|
Putting Luggage into a Car and Taking It Out
- Step close to the trunk.
- Keep baggage close to you whether putting it in or taking it out.
- Keep abdominal muscles tight, bend your knees and hinge at your hips.
- Try sliding luggage to the bumper’s edge.
|
|
At the Hotel
- Use the hotel wheeled luggage cart to bring baggage to your room.
- Don’t keep your suitcase on the floor. Put it on a luggage cart or the bed when emptying.
- If you don’t have help, bring the suitcase to the bed, tilt it on edge, reposition your grip and slide rather than lift it onto the bed or cart.
- Check hotel lighting. Make sure nothing is in walkways.
- Be mindful of possible slippery bathroom floors.
- Bring a small night light.
|
|
Walking
- Wear slip-resistant shoes.
- Always use the handrail (always keep one hand free).
- When walking on cobblestones, use shorter steps and slow down.
- Be careful if it is raining or surfaces are wet.
