Neurological Physiotherapy

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

Neurological physiotherapy is specialized rehabilitation for people living with the effects of injuries or diseases of the central nervous system. Conditions treated include, but are not limited to, stroke, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

How does it work?

Neurological physiotherapy works on the principle of neuroplasticity, which is the brains ability to change according to the use of neural circuits that are underused, and reducing the use of circuits that are overused to re-educate proper movement patterns.

What would we work on?

This specialized branch of physiotherapy analyses a persons posture and movement to determine appropriate therapeutic exercise and interventions. Goals of therapy often include improving functional mobility (such as walking, moving in bed, rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and transfers), improving endurance, balance, strength, and reducing tone/spasticity and pain. Other goals of therapy may include appropriate gait aid prescription and use, accessing community resources, learning adapted exercise, and improving arm and hand function.

What methods are used for therapy?

Neurological physiotherapy at Pro Motion Physiotherapy follows the Neuro-Developmental Theory (NDT)/Bobath models of assessment and treatment, as well as the PWR! Moves program specifically for treating Parkinson’s Disease. In addition, our neuro physiotherapist is highly skilled in incorporating and integrating various orthopedic skills as required to improve range of motion and reduce pain.
