Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used systems of healing in the world. It stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving substances called “endorphins.” It is a very effective tool for relieving muscle tension and trigger-points and also stimulates various systems in the body including the sympathetic nervous system which helps to decrease inflammation and promote healing.

Does It Hurt?

Most people feel only a little discomfort as the very fine, sterile, disposable needles are inserted and some people do not feel any pain.

What Conditions Are Helped By Acupuncture?

At Pro Motion Physiotherapy, acupuncture is used by Physiotherapists to treat musculoskeletal conditions. This includes whiplash, headaches, neck and back pain, tennis elbow, arthritis, etc.

We do not treat addictions, circulatory problems or emotional/ psychological disorders.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

This will vary with each patient and condition being treated. Acupuncture can be used as the only treatment or combined with other forms of therapy. At Pro Motion Physiotherapy, acupuncture is sometimes used as a part of the physiotherapy treatment and it is important that the specific exercises prescribed by the Physiotherapist are done to maintain the improvement.

Are there any special instructions to follow before an Acupuncture treatment?

Patients are advised not to eat a large meal before or after treatment. It is also best to avoid alcohol or sedatives for 4 hours prior to treatment. Pain medications can be taken as required.
